Literary Lions to discuss The Hunger Games staff
Updated: 2012-02-03 12:13:04

JOPLIN - The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is the next title to be discussed by participants in The Literary Lions Book Club of Missouri Southern State University-Joplin. Dr. Doris Walters, retired professor of English, will act as moderator. The group will meet in the lounge area near the University Java coffee shop in MSSU's Spiva Library.

A book tailored for young adults and the first of a series, The Hunger Games set in a post apocalyptic world is a tale of two children, one ruthless, one more humane, who are involved in a fight-to-the-death televised event whose comparison is to modern reality TV and pop culture. Contestant Katniss Everdeen, 16, learns that she must kill or be killed against her rival in this engrossing plot.

Meetings at 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays will include:

  • Mar. 15 - introduction and background

  • March 29 - discussion

  • April 5 - final discussion

The total cost to participate is a $25 donation from members of the general public or $15 from Friends of the Spiva Library. RSVP by March 1, 2012. For more information or to sign up phone the MSSU Alumni Office at (417) 625-9355.
