Local photo contest stresses nature appreciation staff
Updated: 2008-09-13 10:22:32
The Sperry-Galligar Audubon is sponsoring a free photo contest for amateur nature photographers from the 4-state area of Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri. The group is soliciting photos from these categories: (1) animals, plants; (2) landscapes and things in nature and (3) people in nature. All must be shot within 150 miles of Pittsburg, KS.

"I have to admit that this is a pretty low-key , and low tech contest," said Dr. Steve Ford, contest organizer and a professor in the biology department at Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, KS. "I'm not a photographer myself, but I just thought such a local contest might be a good idea to get people out looking at (and appreciating) nature."

The photos must be approximately 8x10 inches, mounted on foamboard and can only be cropped but not altered in any other way. Five photos may be submitted from any category. A special form must be submitted with each entry.

Audubon membership is not required. The deadline is April 30, 2009. "Modest" prizes, mostly recognition, will be awarded in each category and winners will be announced at the May 2009 picnic.

All non-winning photos will be returned if self-addressed envelopes for this purpose are provided with entries. Winning photos in each category become the property of Sperry-Galligar Audubon to periodically be displayed in various public places.

Entry forms may be obtained from any Sperry-Galligar Audubon member, from Chris Pistole at the Wildcat Glades Conservation & Audubon Center in Joplin or from Ford who may be contacted by sending an e-mail here.
