Races for all ages highlight Boomtown Days June 12 l-onstot
Updated: 2010-02-04 13:49:42
Set your goals now and join hundreds of athletes in the Boomtown Half Marathon or Boomtown 5K beginning at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2010. The courses for both races are USATF-certified with the starting point in downtown Joplin. Half-marathoners will run on city streets passing through Joplin’s medical district; several established neighborhoods; city parks; golf courses; the city's new sports complex; and Murphysburg, a historic residential area.

Additional events include a Zumbathon and the free Academy Sports + Outdoors Kids’ Half Marathon. A pre-event banquet on Friday, June 11 will feature Suzy Favor Hamilton, three-time Olympian and holder of seven U.S. National Championships. Hamilton became the highest winning female collegiate athlete ever at the University of Wisconsin by earning nine NCAA championships.

Changes from last year's events include a 50% increase in prize money for first, second, and third places in the overall category of the Half Marathon with a total purse of $6,000; new five-year increment age divisions with additional awards; an I-bag emailed to participants; and a post-race party. All Half Marathon finishers and 5K participants will receive an official Boomtown Run Dri-fit shirt. In addition, Half Marathon finishers will receive a commemorative finishers medal and a special finisher’s gift.

Participants may register for the Boomtown Run Half Marathon, 5K, banquet, kids' half marathon and/or Zumbathon by choosing one of the following methods:

  1. Register online for all events here until 11:59 p.m. CST, Wednesday, June 9 except for the Kids half marathon which has a registration deadline of midnight on March 31. There are no additional registration fees for online registration!

  2. Download a printable registration form to complete and mail with payment. Entry forms sent by snail mail must be postmarked by Saturday, June 5. Forms sent by express mail, fax, or hand delivery must be received by Wednesday, June 9.

  3. Register in person on Friday, June 11 from noon to 9 p.m. at the packet pick-up area at Joplin's Memorial Hall.

  4. Kids may register on-line or by visiting the outdoors department at Academy Sports, Range Line Road at 17th Street. Please note that on-line registration is not considered complete until the participant takes the on-line registration confirmation to Academy Sports + Outdoors in Joplin to receive their official training log.

There will be no registration on the day of the events.

The fees for registration are: (by March 31) $25 for the 5K Run and Zumbathon or $45 for Half Marathon; (by April 1-May 15) $50 for Half Marathon; ( by May 16-June 9) $60 for the Half Marathon.

First begun in 2003 the Boomtown Run was a 5K race that was part of Joplin’s annual Boomtown Days Festival. In 2009 the region’s first half marathon was added. Last year more than 500 runners crossed the finish line, including Runner’s World chief running Officer Bart Yasso, 15 elite runners and hundreds of other competitive and recreational runners from 12 states.

Co-chairs Audie Dennis and Dwaine Russell will be working with community volunteers to coordinate the event, presented by Freeman Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine.
