| Strong NPS plan for Current River is urged | keating | | Updated: 2012-08-21 14:10:17 |  | | | 4,400 petitions supporting the National Park Service management of the Current and Jack Fork rivers were presented to Deputy Director Peggy O'Dell in Washington, D.C. on August 21, 2012 by a coalition of environmental organizations and outdoor enthusiasts. Representing them are (L-R), Elizabeth Ouzts, regional coordinator of Environment America; Sarah MaacFarland, state field associate of Environment Missouri; O'Dell and Stuart Keating, advocate for Environment Missouri. In urging a strong management plan for the Ozark National Scenic Riverways the coalition believes that the Current River will continue to face increased siltification that ruins fishing opportunities; torn up trails and illegal access that destroy the pristine, natural landscape and e coli impairment that seriously endangers human health. In early 2013 the National Park Service will be considering the selection and implementation of one of four potential management plans for the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, ranging from a strong plan that would restore the river to the conditions present when the park was established to a plan that would essentially take no action and allow further degradation of the river from unauthorized use. |
