| Burlington, KS - Approximately 50 horses in the custody of the Coffey County Sheriff’s Department are now available for placement to new homes. Individuals interested in obtaining ownership of one or more of these horses are encouraged to apply for placement approval.
The horses were seized by the Sheriff’s department on July 30, 2010, as a result of the execution of a search warrant at Winding Roads Equine Rescue and Retirement, Inc. near Waverly, KS. The warrant was issued in response to complaints of neglect and abuse of the horses on the property.
While a small number of the horses had to be euthanized due to poor health, nearly 30 already have been placed with new owners. Approximately 50 horses remain, and they represent a wide range of ages, sizes and breeds.
“These horses deserve to go to good homes and be loved,” said Coffey County Sheriff Randy Rogers. “My goal is to find placement for all of them, and the court has given me 21 days to do so.”
Karen Everhart, owner of Horse Calls, LLC and executive director of Rainbow Meadows Equine Rescue and Retirement, Inc., has been designated in overseeing the placement of the horses. Individuals interested in being selected for placement will be required to submit an application and undergo a facility inspection prior to being granted ownership of any horse.
