Updated: 2010-08-04 12:21:58

The third annual Greek Festival, featuring authentic Greek cuisine (entrees, pastries, drinks), music and dancing, will be held Friday-Sunday, Sept. 10-12, 2010, on the grounds of St. Thomas the Apostle Orthodox Church, 4200 S. Holiday Ave., in southwest Springfield. Festival hours on Friday are 5-10 p.m.; on Saturday are noon until 10 p.m. and on Sunday are noon until 3 p.m.

A full menu of Greek entrees, pastries and drinks will be served. All weekend, church members will demonstrate Greek dancing to traditional music provided by Greek Night Productions. Free dance lessons will be available and everyone is urged to join in. Inflatables and other activities will be available for the children.

Let me teach you to dance...go here.

Manoli’s Jewelers again will offer a chance to win a one-of-a-kind 14-karat yellow gold Byzantine cross embedded with five red rubies, valued at $1,499. Tickets are $5 each and all proceeds benefit the church.

To tempt your taste buds, menu entrees will include: pork and chicken souvlaki, Grecian herbed, grilled and skewered with pita bread; gyros, marinated and grilled meat wrapped in toasted pita bread and topped with the traditional tzatziki, a cucumber sauce; rice pilaf, made the Greek way; spanakopita, savory spinach and cheese pie; tiropita, buttery cheese pie; dolmathes, stuffed grape leaves; baklava, crisp filo pastry layered with nuts and spices and drenched in honey; kataifi, shredded pastry dough, soaked through with nuts and honey; koulouria, buttery cookies, rolled and twisted; kafenio, Greek coffee from The Coffee Ethic and Greek beer, wine and other beverages.

The three-day festival, free and open to the public and held rain or shine, will also include tours of the sanctuary and brief overviews of the orthodox faith by parish priest Andrew Moore.

Here are directions to the church: West on Republic Road from Kansas Expressway past Scenic Avenue, left on Glenn Avenue, left on Lark Street and then it’s one short block to St. Thomas the Apostle Orthodox Church.
