| The Joplin Chess Club will host a Summer Open on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at Cunningham Park in Joplin.
The five-round rated Swiss tournament begins with on-site registration at 8 a.m., followed by the first round at 9 a.m. Each player will have 60 minutes for each game. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded.
The entry fee is $10 if pre-registered, or $12 at the site. All players must be current United States Chess Federation members by August 22. USCF membership can be processed online here.
Players may register in advance for the tournament by contacting joplinchess@yahoo.com or writing to the Joplin Chess Club, 2618 S. Schifferdecker Ave., Joplin, MO 64804. Entries should include name, address, phone, e-mail, USCF ID number, and current rating. Checks should be payable to Bart Gibbons.
A BBQ lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, drinks and dessert will be available on-site for $5. Participants requesting the lunch should enclose an additional $5 with their entry fee.
Players are requested to bring set, clock and board to the Cunningham Park pavilion at 26th and Maiden Lane. A public swimming pool is available in the park (day use fee payable to Cunningham Park).
