| Joplin Police received a call of a collision occurring just west of the Hearne's Blvd exit of I-44. The accident occured just before 10 a.m. on October 6, 2008. A motorist was driving eastbound in the westbound passing lane and struck another vehicle head-on as the second vehicle pulled around a semi to pass.
The driver of the eastbound vehicle has been identified as Dorothy Velton of Sarcoxie, MO. She was 85.
The driver of the westbound vehicle has been identified as Velma Archer, age 70, of Baxter Springs, KS. Both drivers were declared dead at the scene.
